ORGANISED BY:

&
DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
DINABANDHU ANDREWS COLLEGE
IN COLLABORATION WITH
INDIAN ACCOUNTING ASSOCIATION, MIDNAPORE BRANCH

Madam/Sir,

It gives us immense pleasure to inform you that the Department of Commerce and Department of Economics of Dinabandhu Andrews College, Garia in collaboration with The Indian Accounting Association, Midnapore Branch, are going to organize a two-day UGC-Sponsored National Level Seminar on "Emerging Issues in Financial Reporting and Financial Markets" on 18th and 19th November 2011. Prominent scholars, distinguished academicians and professionals from all corners of the country are expected to participate in the seminar in various capacities. The seminar will deliberate on the following issues:

International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) – Need and Challenges Ahead:
In the process of ongoing liberalization and globalization both financial and product market have become global. This phenomenon has created a strong need for a global set of accounting system to facilitate global transaction. Moreover, to improve further the quality of accounting a worldwide need was felt. In response to these need international organizations like IMF, World Bank and various international boards of accounting together developed a system of accounting known as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The introduction of this new system is likely to revolutionize the teaching and practices of accounting all over the world. The new system found entry in academia and in practice in many advanced countries. India has already committed to implement it by 2011. Unfortunately, little preparation has so far been made in this area. We attempt to shade some lights upon various aspects of IFRS through our proposed seminar.

Accordingly, pertinent questions have been raised from almost all relevant corners regarding various aspects of IFRS such as:

  • Is it really necessary to converge with IFRS? Or should we have our own standards?
  • Will the convergence really help us?
  • How should we convert our present set of accounting data in terms of IFRS?
  • IFRS convergence will have significant impact on the reported income and as a result, on tax liability. How will the appropriate authority be acting?
  • Focus of IFRS is on fair value and hence, can we ignore the possibility of income volatility?

  • This seminar is planned to organize academics and professionals who are contemplating to explore the various challenges and opportunities that have put forward by IFRS. The event is expected to provide an enlightened platform for the participants to communicate amongst themselves this serious theoretical and practical issues and the opportunity to network with peers and learn from invited experts.

    Financial Markets – Emerging Dynamics:
The past decade of liberalisation and globalisation as instilled a considerable degree of professionalism and transparency in the style and functioning of financial market analysts and practitioners. The present seminar intends to deal with some of the recent development and trends in the Indian Financial Sector. We are hopeful that we will be able to hear voices of eminent thinkers of our country to tackle the emerging difficulties on one hand and take on challenges on the other with special reference to the rapid pace of globalisation i.e. transforming Indian Equity Markets as well as the emergence and role of Equity Analyst in India.

We wish to design the deliberations in the seminar so that we can deal with the following issues in order to emerge a harmonious outlook for the well being of mankind as a whole in the Financial Sector

  • Current Issues in Financial Markets: Exit and Post-Financial Crisis Issues and Policy Changes
  • Current Issues in Financial Markets: Financial Turmoil
  • Private Pension and Consumer Protection
  • Debt Management, Bond Markets and Stock Exchanges

  • Thanking you with a request to contribute papers on the themes of the seminar and also take part in the seminar as delegates to participate in the deliberations.
